Our staff attended a training course in Belgium, at the home of Hengelhoef Concrete Joints (HCJ), a manufacturer of industrial floor expansion joints!

During the training of our partner in the production of expansion steel profiles, Hengelhoef Concrete Joints (better known as HCJ), our staff gained new and useful knowledge that will help us to improve our professionalism and the quality of our interactions with our customers in the future.

Benefits of HCJ industrial floor expansion joints

The HCJ team has been manufacturing and distributing some of the best performing dilatation profiles in many countries around the world for many years. HCJ dilatation joints enable customers to increase the maximum capacity of their warehouses and logistics halls, and allow faster forklift movements. In addition, the superior performance of HCJ profiles can reduce the required concrete thickness during construction, saving our customers significant money and reducing CO2 emissions.

HCJ joints also have a number of beneficial features that can provide our customers with significant business benefits in both the short and long term, which is why Allen Face’s team of independent industrial flooring experts recommend the extensive use of HCJ products.

As part of the training, HCJ colleagues and engineers gave detailed presentations on customer relationship management, the behavior and properties of dilatation joints, as well as a thorough demonstration of the principles of correct profile installation. During the training, our staff had the opportunity to visit a logistics plant where the floor has been working perfectly for 8 years without cracks thanks to the Cosinus Slide® profile installed.

New trends in the world of dilatation profiles for 2024

The event also saw the launch of new products such as the HCJ Post-Tension Floor Joint, which won the 2024 Experts’ Choice Innovative Product Award at the world-renowned World of Concrete trade show. HCJ’s brand new Post-Tension Dilatation Profile helps to manage movements of up to 70mm, minimize cracks in the floor and protect against shrinkage and general ground movement.

Another new feature was the introduction of the expansion profile connector: the new HCJ connector allows the straight expansion profiles of the HCJ family, such as the E-Straight or the outdoor Omega 3mm profile, to be installed without welding. The HCJ weldless expansion profile saves considerable time and resources, and the use of this technology is set to play a significant role in the future, both domestically and internationally.

During the event we were particularly honoured to receive a recognition award from the Hengelhoef Concrete Joints team. Our company’s outstanding performance last year earned us the award for the highest sales growth among HCJ partners, which is a good indication of the growing popularity of HCJ’s high-quality products. Thank you very much for the recognition from the HCJ team, we hope that our cooperation will continue to be successful!

What is the goal of the industrial floor?

While creating warehouses or other logistics centers, our goal is not only to make something nice-looking. You want to possess a building (warehouse, logistics center, factory) that delivers the goals of your organization, whether it is satisfying your renters, or serving your logistics processes efficiently and smoothly. Therefore, every step needs special attention, even the industrial concrete floor.

The industrial floor is “just” a small component of this complex system, but it serves as a basis for all work processes. Industrial floors are crucial elements in a sense that if they cannot serve its intended purposes, it will be a constant problem, making any work harder and less efficient.

To construct a perfect industrial concrete floor for its intended purposes, it should go like “once we built it, now we can forget that it is even there”, because it will not cause any troubles, and will work just fine for the upcoming years.

What makes our industrial floors unproblematic?

Your industrial concrete floor will only be truly unproblematic and shock-free, if it works so fine you do not even have the idea of it being there. It serves us so naturally like our legs and joints, which helps us to walk, or our eyes to see.

It is so natural that these parts of our body works, that neither we think about seeing with our actual eyes, nor about how we are going to lift our legs to walk, because these things just work as intended. And that is how it should be.

We can compare a poorly designed or constructed industrial concrete floor with our legs if we have some problems with them. Suddenly, we think about them once the problems occur.

Now it is like an obstacle, because we cannot do what we really want to. Moreover, fixing the problem (inspection, doctors, surgery, rehabilitation, etc.) costs a lot of time and money, diverting our attention from the things we want to do with them. Naturally, as almost everything, these problems could have been avoided previously.

An industrial concrete floor is not that complicated as the human body is, but there are at least 12 “problematic fields” – like walking in the case of humans – which needs highlighted attention.

Good news is that with Allen Face Europe, we design and engineer industrial floors in a way that it is going to be “forgettable”, meaning unproblematic and well-working.

How should we implement the concrete steel joints regarding industrial floors?

One of the critical areas concerning industrial concrete floors can be found in the topic of concrete steel joints.

The industrial floor for modern warehouses, logistics centers, and factories are mostly built with the help of panels. These units range from 400 to 1000 square meters. As a whole, these will serve as the final industrial floor for any purposes.

These panels are bordered by the previously mentioned concrete steel joints, and their intended roles are significant. They transfer the weight from one panel to another, whether it is the dynamic weight of the forklifts, or the static weight of the shelves.

As indicated by their names, the steel concrete joints truly are the joints of the industrial concrete floors. Similarity can once again be found when compared to the human body, since we will only have problems with our joints if we overload them, or do not give them the necessary caring.

The joints of the industrial concrete floors

It is up to us to make the best decision in the case of the concrete joints for our industrial floor.

It is crucial what principles we consider while choosing from all the available concrete joints from the market, and it is also significant how precisely and carefully we implement them into the industrial floor itself.

The effects of a poorly chosen concrete joint profile

Unfortunately, according to my experiences, making the best decision is still far away from ideal. We can see its consequences on the following pictures:

These are far from being just “old” industrial concrete floors, since they were built 5 years ago.

I do not think that the owner is happy that the forklifts have to almost stop completely to get over the concrete joint profiles.

They are not happy neither when they have to pay for a new set of wheels for the forklifts.

But also, the warranty of the forklifts can perish because of the conditions of the concrete industrial floor.

Moreover, it is going to be really hard to deal with the constant complaints from the leader of the warehouse, or from the drivers of the forklifts directly. Not to mention what health related issues can appear in the case of the drivers.

The consequences of a poorly designed industrial floor

It is justifiable to feel bitterness once the costs of the repair are revealed. Furthermore, if the warehouse was already working, you would have to move certain parts, which results in even more extra work and costs just to fix your industrial floor.

Needless to say, these costs would be better spent on new investments and projects.

Moreover, it is a true challenge to find reliable, experienced specialists that bear the responsibility of a well-working industrial floor.

What is one of the most frequent problems of concrete industrial floors?

The issues are mostly caused by not choosing the adequate concrete joint for the industrial floors.

During any projects, all costs should be considered. They should be immediately paid, and we should always save on them if possible.

At the same time, we always pay the highest amount for those “savings”, which result in extra costs once the warehouse/logistics center/factory functions, and its fixing is even harder than prevention would have been in the first place, during the construction.

No one can expect from the owners/project managers to be specialists on every field regarding the construction works. Hence they need professionals to prevent future problems, and to ease their own jobs as well.

Going back to the case I mentioned previously, which can be seen on the pictures, a poor decision was made regarding the concrete joint profiles. They opted for the cheaper solution rather than choosing the long-lasting, quality one. Its effects are visible on the industrial concrete floor.

How can we get the functionally perfect concrete industrial floor?

By being careful, and with the assistance from specialists, you can get the concrete joints which will perfectly serve your needs. Although you have to consider that it is not always the cheapest solution, but it will be in the long run, since no (or much less) maintenance will be needed, because we design and engineer industrial concrete floors for 40-50 years.

Although we have to note that this is the perspective of the owner, which cannot be expected from the executor.

In our opinion, only an independent industrial floor specialist can consider every perspective regarding the floor, and can suggest the best concrete joint, customized for your needs.

Concrete joints are not the only solutions for the frequent problems

Now that our concrete joints will withstand the weights, we will get a healthy industrial concrete floor that is going to function as it was intended for years and decades.

But at the same time, the cracks on the pictures can only be “achieved” if other factors were present, it was not only the fault of the poorly chosen concrete joint profiles.

One of the reasons can also be that once the concrete joints are chosen right, they can still be implemented into the industrial concrete floor wrong. Naturally, this problem can be avoided if industrial floor specialists supervise the construction processes.

How to achieve a truly long-lasting industrial floor?

Our industrial concrete floor will only be reliable and cost-effective, if the construction of the floor was supervised by specialists from start to finish.

This requires entrusting an independent industrial floor contractor with their help, who possesses the needed experience and the appropriate insights from designing the thickness and other details of the industrial floor, through the controlled construction and the accuracy of the floor levelness, until finally knowing certain functions (whether random or controlled traffic uses the industrial floor for instance) and special operations (grinding the industrial floor).

This way, you do not need to be a specialist on the field of industrial floors, so you can pay attention to what really moves your organization ahead.

Our company, Allen Face Europe Ltd can not only suggest you the perfect concrete joints for your needs (HCJ concrete joints), but also assure the quality of your industrial concrete floor on multiple fields, such as floor flatness and floor levelness, and we can also physically provide solutions to these problems with VNA grinding or spot grinding.

You can decide whether you need our services or not by signing up for our online free preliminary consultation, in which we can talk about the needs and requirements of your industrial concrete floor, and find the best, customized solutions, just for you.

Throughout the years and different projects I worked on, I formed a firm belief why an industrial floor specialist should be involved in the designing and planning processes regarding industrial concrete floors.

I recognized the frequent problem that although the industrial floor is the greatest single surface that is exposed to everyday workloads (such as warehousing or any factorial process), it does not get the care and attention it requires. But what would be a solution to this problem?

Why is it important to organize every step of the construction of industrial floors?

As we know, a lot of professionals work to achieve a good quality industrial floor, but somehow, it is not always the result. One reason might be that, according to what I have seen, each step gets supervised by different professionals, and every next step is overseen by another specialist.

Their work does not get supervised by one responsible industrial floor specialist, which can result in problems for the concrete industrial floor.

Is it sufficient to contract an industrial floor specialist / consultant?

The good news is that sometimes these parties (designer, procurer, executors, end-user) can communicate successfully, and the industrial floor turns out to be suitable for all its intended purposes.

In this case, all the implemented standards, the needs, and the future goals of utilization were nicely aligned, and the industrial floor is ready to use. Unfortunately, this is the rarer case.

If the alignment of different steps do not succeed, the corrections will be hurtful in the form of extra costs regarding the industrial concrete floor.

For instance, it turns out that those floors that were designed for random traffic will be used in VNA (Very Narrow Aisle) systems, but it was designed differently. Then, as previously mentioned, the extra costs are going to be greatly significant, whereas this problem could have been avoided with an industrial floor specialist.

The initial costs did not include the corrective grinding, which is needed for a well-working VNA system, therefore we have to pay extra if we want to use our warehouse as it was intended.

Though progress was truly made, since this mistake is not as usual as it was 10 years ago, but still, there is always room to widen one’s perspective.

The expertise of monitoring all work processes regarding industrial flooring

Usually, this comprehensive task is reliant on the general project managers, but the issue is that they have to look out for so many other things, taking up most of their attention, that the industrial concrete floor will only get little care and attentiveness.

According to my experience, mostly those project managers and professionals contract an industrial floor specialist who encountered the pitfalls hidden in the field of industrial concrete flooring. In order to avoid extra costs and postpones, they hire a professional who will be able to coordinate the tasks and synchronize them to satisfy every need regarding concrete industrial floors.

Naturally, this specialist will not be there to judge others’ work, but to give a helping hand, to guide the construction of the industrial floor in an adequate direction.

These professionals have to be there at every step in the industrial flooring process, because only then they will be able to synchronize the different needs and requirements, and make a floor that is perfect for its functions and is long lasting.

In this case, emerging problems become avoidable with a industrial concrete floors specialist on-site, which will be beneficial in the short and distant future as well.

Let’s avoid the extra costs and problems of industrial concrete floors together!

Sadly, until one did not run into a problem concerning industrial floors, they cannot know the extra costs of it! Therefore, they will not have the idea of contracting an independent industrial concrete floor specialist to collaborate and to work together with them.

Our opinion is that if there is an industrial concrete floor specialist present during the construction, they can oversee the processes from a wider perspective, and can give advice (or help practically) make and finalize the industrial floor in accordance with your needs.

This approach on minimizing the costs of industrial flooring is the one that will be beneficial for you, especially in the long run.

To summarize, a competent professional/advisor on the field of industrial concrete flooring (could be called a moderator as well), who knows the work processes, the standards, and their rightful implementations, and is aware of not only the newest, but the older technologies as well, will not only ease everyone’s job while working together on an industrial floor, but will protect the floor’s health in the long run.

We are Allen Face Europe, we think in decades when it comes to the perfect industrial concrete floor.

Hire an industrial floor specialist now!

What is DIN 18202 testing like?

All that DIN 18202 testing takes is a floor profiler instrument (D-Meter or F-Meter) and a computer that runs Excel(R) for data analysis.

Let’s suppose that your daily placement is somewhere between 600 and 1600m2. To collect a representative sample of floor profile data, you measure this floor section along two lines in two perpendicular directions parallel to the sides of the floor section. Unfortunately, DIN 18202 doesn’t give any heads-up on the length, number and organization of measurement lines.

Upon laying out the measurement lines, you take your D-Meter and “walk” it along the measurement lines. The D-Meter is a walking type floor profiler. It takes elevation readings every 300mm, thereby shows the floor’s true profile. Generally it takes 30-60 minutes to test a 600-1600m2 floor section with a D-Meter. If you need higher testing efficiency than that, you can use the F-Meter. It is a rolling type floor profiler. The operator pulls it along the lines, stopping every 3m for 2 seconds. The F-Meter allows higher speed testing without compromising accuracy.

The end product of both D-Meter and F-Meter testing is the floor’s profile along the measurement lines, as you can see below.

D-Meter takes readings every 300mm, F-Meter takes readings every 150mm.

THE REST OF THE INTIMIDATING WORK (I.E. DATA ANALYSIS) IS DELEGATED TO THE COMPUTER.

The floor’s true profile along one of the measurement lines (measured with F-Meter)

How is the collected floor profile data analysed?

Once you collected the data, you connect your D-Meter or F-Meter to your computer and download everything via USB.

Then you paste the downloaded data into the complimentary DIN 18202 Analysis Software that comes with every D-Meter and F-Meter and you print the automatically generated test report.

It is very fast and simple and you really wouldn’t have to know more than that. However, I would like to share with you how the DIN 18202 Analysis Software works.

DIN 18202 is not very clear about quite a few things. It provides two methods for floor profile analysis. One of them is taking a straight edge, placing it on the high points of the floor, then measuring the distance between the high points and the gap under the straight edge.

Then you take this information and you go to the graph below.

You find the allowable deviation belonging to the distance between the high points. If the measured gap is smaller than the allowable deviation, it passes the test.

So this is exactly what the DIN 18202 Analysis Software does.

It takes various length straight edges
(D-Meter: 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210, 240, 270cm, 3m, 4,5m and 6m)
(F-Meter: 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, 135, 150, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225, 240, 255, 270, 285cm, 3m, 4,5m, 6m)
and slides them through the floor profiles, registers every gap, and compares them to the allowable limit.
In the test report it shows the number of gaps that have been checked and how many of those is deficient.

Concluding remarks

D-Meter and F-Meter makes DIN 18202 testing quick and simple. Literally ANYONE can learn how to perform this test.
